Spruce This tree (in particular, the Sitka spruce) has had a very bad press in modern times. In many countries in Europe, where the need for wood had nearly exhausted the existing woodland supply, the fast growing spruce was planted to provide an alternative source, and prevent the woods being lost altogether, and turning into a dry, barren wasteland. However, what the zealous tree planters failed to realise, was that the fallen needles and the darkness created by planting these tall evergreens, had made it impossible for the native, broadleaved trees to grow. This is a situation that has only beginning to be corrected in the last few years. The trees themselves are not bringers of such doom and gloom though.- far from it. The energy of these trees is quick, refreshing and light. That is what I felt from the one under which I sat, and the music came through in the same manner. As mentioned in my introduction, this was the first tree piece that I composed. If you haven't got time to really connect with a tree, but need energy (particularly mental) fast, this is an excellent tree to go to.
